Too much noise in the residential environment: Germany is top of the list of EU countries

According to the data published by Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), roughly 28% of the population in Germany felt bothered by noise caused by traffic or neighbours in their residential environment in 2018. In the European Union (EU), only Malta recorded a similar level of perceived noise disturbance as Germany. It also reports that the proportion in Germany was up by just under two percentage points compared with 2017 (26%).

In countries such as Croatia, Estonia and Bulgaria, the proportion of the population who felt bothered by noise in their residential environment in 2018 was lowest across EU countries (below 10% each). The EU average was 18%.
