Seasonally adjusted confidence index decreased by 0.5% in services, 0.4% in retail trade and 3.9% in construction sectors in December compared to November.

Seasonally adjusted confidence index which was 119.4 for services in November decreased by 0.5% in December to 118.8. In services sector compared to the previous month, business situation over past three months sub-index decreased by 1.6% to 121.2. Demand-turnover over past three months sub-index decreased by 0.2% to 117.1 and demand-turnover expectation over next three months sub-index increased by 0.3% to 118.1.

Seasonally adjusted retail trade confidence index decreased by 0.4% in December to 121.5. In retail trade sector compared to the previous month, business activity-sales over past three months sub-index increased by 2.4% to 133.6. Current volume of stock sub-index decreased by 2.9% to 96.9 and business activity-sales expectation over next three months sub-index decreased by 1.3% to 133.8.

Construction confidence index realized as 90.0

Seasonally adjusted construction confidence index which was 93.6 in November decreased by 3.9% in December to 90.0. In construction sector compared to the previous month, current overall order books sub-index became 79.2 by decreasing 3.2%. Total employment expectation over next three months sub-index decreased by 4.4% to 100.9.

In construction sector, 48.0% of the enterprises indicated at least one factor limiting their activities while 52.0% of the enterprises indicated none in December. Among the main factors limiting activities in construction sector; “financial constraints” which was 28.6% in November realized as 33.8% in December, “insufficient demand” which was 19.6% in November realized as 17.3% in December and “other factors” which was 13.3% in November realized as 18.9% in December.

In services sector compared to the previous month, business situation over past three months sub-index decreased by 6.3% to 96.7. Demand-turnover over past three months sub-index decreased by 2.2% to 100.9 and demand-turnover expectation over next three months sub-index increased by 5.2% to 109.0.

Current volume of stock sub-index increased by 3.5% to 90.8 and business activity-sales expectation over next three months sub-index increased by 5.9% to 110.9.

Seasonally adjusted construction confidence index which was 77.3 in April increased by 3.0% in May to 79.6. In construction sector compared to the previous month, current overall order books sub-index became 74.5 by decreasing 0.5%. Total employment expectation over next three months sub-index increased by 6.3% to 84.7.

Among the main factors limiting activities in construction sector; “financial constraints” which was 28.7% in April realized as 24.2% in May, “insufficient demand” which was 25.5% in April realized as 26.6% in May and “other factors” which was 23.9% in April realized as 30.1% in May.

Starting from January 2021, the method used in the business tendency surveys for determining enterprises to apply the surveys has been updated. Enterprise’s turnover and sectors’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) value added weights have been started to use in calculations. Detailed methodological information is available in the “Methodological Document On The Major Revision Made In Sectoral Confidence Indices” attached to the press release.

Confidence index increased in services sector while decreased in retail trade and construction sectors

Seasonally adjusted confidence index increased by 2.9% in services sector, while decreased 0.1% in retail trade sector and 5.2% in construction sector in January 2021 compared to the December 2020.

Sectoral Confidence Indices Jump in August in Turkey

Despite devastating effects of the novel coronavirus on global economies, the Turkish economy has managed to signal a quick recovery and a better outlook in the second half of 2020. The latest examples were the sectoral confidence indices in August.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data, Turkey’s seasonally adjusted services confidence index rose by 5.7 percent, reaching 70.5 in August from 66.7 in July. TurkStat also revealed that retail trade confidence index increased to 94.9 in August.

In addition, Central Bank of Turkey unveiled that capacity utilization rate of manufacturing industry jumped from 70.7 percent in July to 73.3 percent in August. The Bank also said real sector confidence index posted an upward trend, increasing by 5.5 pts to reach 106.2 in the same period.
