Producer Price Index for final demand in the U.S. increased 0.7% in January

USA PRODUCER PRICE INDEXES – JANUARY 2023

The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.7 percent in January, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Final demand prices declined 0.2 percent in December 2022 and advanced 0.3 percent in November. On an unadjusted basis, the index for final demand rose 6.0 percent for the 12 months ended January 2023.

In January, a 1.2-percent rise in prices for final demand goods led the advance in the final demand index. Prices for final demand services also moved higher, increasing 0.4 percent.

The index for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services rose 0.6 percent in January 2023, the largest advance since moving up 0.9 percent in March 2022. For the 12 months ended in January 2023, prices for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services increased 4.5 percent.

Final Demand

Final demand goods: The index for final demand goods moved up 1.2 percent in January, the largest increase since rising 2.1 percent in June 2022. Most of the January advance is attributable to a 5.0-percent jump in prices for final demand energy. The index for final demand goods less foods and energy increased 0.6 percent. In contrast, prices for final demand foods fell 1.0 percent.

Product detail: Nearly one-third of the January rise in the index for final demand goods can be traced to prices for gasoline, which increased 6.2 percent. The indexes for residential natural gas, diesel fuel, jet fuel, soft drinks, and motor vehicles also moved higher. Conversely, prices for fresh and dry vegetables decreased 33.5 percent. The indexes for residual fuels and for basic organic chemicals also declined.

Final demand services: The index for final demand services advanced 0.4 percent in January, the same as in December. Over 80 percent of the broad-based increase in January is attributable to prices for final demand services less trade, transportation, and warehousing, which rose 0.6 percent. Margins for final demand trade services moved up 0.2 percent. (Trade indexes measure changes in margins received by wholesalers and retailers.) Prices for final demand transportation and warehousing services also advanced 0.2 percent.

Product detail: A major factor in the January rise in prices for final demand services was the index for hospital outpatient care, which jumped 1.4 percent. The indexes for automobiles and automobile parts retailing; health, beauty, and optical goods retailing; portfolio management; chemicals and allied products wholesaling; and airline passenger services also moved higher. In contrast, margins for fuels and lubricants retailing fell 17.5 percent. Prices for long-distance motor carrying and for securities brokerage, dealing, and investment advice also declined.

Agriculture PPI increased by 1.70% in October

Producer price index of agricultural products (Agriculture – PPI), in October 2019, increased by 1.70% compared with the previous month, increased by 11.64% compared with December of the previous year, increased by 18.22% compared with the same month of the previous year and increased by 22.64% compared with twelve months averages.Compared to the previous month; agriculture and hunting products increased by 1.88%, forestry products decreased by 0.90% and fishing decreased by 2.57%.

The highest monthly increase was in perennial crops

Regarding monthly changes by main groups; perennial crops increased by 7.67%, live animals and animal products increased by 0.98% and non-perennial crops decreased by 0.34%.

The vegetables from sub-agriculture groups decreased by 2.93%

From sub-agriculture groups; there were increases for pome fruits and stone fruits by 9.61%, for other farmed animals and animal products by 2.05%, for cereals (except rice), leguminous crops and oil seeds by 0.15%, however, there were decreases for rice (in hulk) by 2.01% and citrus fruits by 0.91%.

In October 2019, 92 items included in the Agriculture PPI; while 10 new items included this month, prices of 41 items increased, prices of 36 items decreased and prices of 5 items remained unchanged with respect to previous month.

Domestic producer price index increased by 0.17%Domestic producer price index (D-PPI) increased by 0.17% on monthly basis, increased by 6.71% on December of the previous year basis, increased by 1.70% on same month of the previous year basis and increased by 22.58% on the twelve months moving averages basis in October 2019.

D-PPI increased by 1.32% for mining and stone quarrying, increased by 0.03% for manufacturing, increased by 1.35% for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning, increased by 0.96% for water supply compared with the previous month.

The highest monthly increase was in crude petroleum and natural gas

The highest rates of monthly increase in D-PPI by subdivisions of industry were index for crude petroleum and natural gas by 9.59%, for other transport equipment by 2.62%, for tobacco products by 2.47%. On the other hand the highest rates of monthly decrease in D-PPI by sub divisions of industry were basic metals by 2.21%, for paper and paper products by 1.26%, for wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture by 0.34%.

The highest monthly increase in main industrial groupings was in energy

According to main industrial groupings classification in October 2019, the highest rate of monthly increase was in energy and the highest rate of annual increase was in nondurable consumer goods.

Producer Price Index of Agricultural Products in Turkey, April 2017

Agriculture PPI increased by 2.05% in April
Producer price index of agricultural products (Agriculture – PPI) increased on the previous month by 2.05%, on December of the previous year basis increased by 9.15%, on same month of the previous year increased by 17.25% and on the twelve months moving averages basis increased by 6.07% in April 2017.

Compared to the previous month; agriculture and hunting products increased by 2.06%, fishing increased by 5.03%, but forestry products decreased by 1.66%.

The highest monthly increase was in perennial crops
Monthly changes by main groups; perennial crops products increased by 9.10%, non – perennial crops increased by 0.86% and live animals and animal products increased by 0.34%.

The vegetables from sub-agriculture groups increased by 1.24%
From sub-agriculture groups; there were increases for citrus fruits by 2.95%, for leguminous crops and oil seeds by 1.17% and for rice (in hulk) by 0.58%, but there were decreases for poultry, live and eggs by 8.94% and for fibre plants by 3.23%.

Agriculture PPI decreased by 0.98% in March
Producer price index of agricultural products (Agriculture – PPI) decreased on the previous month by 0.98%, on December of the previous year basis increased by 6.96%, on same month of the previous year increased by 12.70% and on the twelve months moving averages basis increased by 4.33% in March 2017.
Compared to the previous month; agriculture and hunting products decreased by 0.54%, forestry products decreased by 3.03% and fishing decreased by 12.93%.

The highest monthly decrease was in perennial crops
Monthly changes by main groups; perennial crops products decreased by 5.81%, but non – perennial crops increased by 0.75% and live animals and animal products increased by 0.33%.

The vegetables from sub-agriculture groups increased by 1.18%
From sub-agriculture groups; there were increases for rice (in hulk) by 1.83%, and for leguminous crops and oil seeds by 0.70%, but there were decreases for citrus fruits by 6.28%,for poultry, live and eggs by 3.01% and for fibre plants by 2.09%.
