According to the news of Hürriyet Daily News, Turkey’s airports served a total of 13.93 million passengers in January, a slight 0.8 percent decline from a year ago, data from the airports authority (DHMİ) have shown.

The number of international passengers, who went through the country’s airports, jumped 12.1 percent on an annual basis to 6.13 million, while the domestic traveler tally declined by 9.1 percent to 7.8 million in the month.

Istanbul Airport, whose first phase officially opened in October 2018 and which took over air traffic from the former main Atatürk Airport on April 6, served 5.3 million passengers (4 million international and 1.3 million domestic).

With a full capacity of 200 million passengers annually after the completion of all four phases with six runways by 2028, Istanbul Airport is set to become a global aviation hub hosting more than 100 airlines and flights to over 300 destinations around the world.

DHMİ data also showed that a total of 2.94 million passengers used Sabiha Gökçen, the second largest airport in Istanbul, with the number of domestic passengers declining 3 percent on an annual basis to 1.72 million and international passengers rising 25 percent to 1.21 million.

Esenboğa Airport in the capital Ankara saw a 14 percent decline in passenger traffic to 1.05 million in the first month of 2020.

Passenger traffic at Adnan Menderes in İzmir, the country’s third-largest city and a popular holiday destination, declined 9 percent on an annual basis. International passengers soared 39 percent to 147,100, while domestic passengers dropped 15 percent to 741,000.

The number of air passengers in Turkey totaled 209 million in 2019, marking a 0.8 percent drop from the previous year.

The number of international passengers rose more than 11 percent to 109 million, while the number of domestic passengers fell 11.3 percent to 100 million.

According to the news of Hürriyet Daily News, the number of air passengers -including transit passengers- in Turkey totaled 209.09 million in 2019, the country’s airport authority announced on Jan. 7.

The January-December figure was down by 0.9% compared to the previous year, the General Directorate of the State Airports Authority (DHMI) data showed.

However, the number of international passengers soared by 11.4% year-on-year to hit 108.7 million in the same period.

Over 100 million domestic passengers traveled through Turkish airports, down 11.3%, in the same period.

Turkish airports served for 2.03 million planes — including overflights — last year, marking 0.6% rise versus 2018.

The DHMI data showed that cargo traffic was also down by 10.9% to around 3.44 million tons in 2019, compared to the previous year.

The new Istanbul Airport was the busiest airport in the country, hosting 52.6 million passengers and serving nearly 330,000 planes.

The airport in the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya followed it with 35.7 million travelers, nearly 75% of whom were international flight passengers.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Istanbul’s main air hub on the city’s Asian side, was the third active airport, serving 35.47 million passengers.

According to the news of Hürriyet Daily News, Turkey’s national flag carrier Turkish Airlines served 68.8 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2019, the company announced on Dec. 10.

The number of passengers carried by the firm was around 64 million in the same period last year.

Turkish Airlines’ seat occupancy rate — passenger load factor — was 81.7% in the January-November period.

The number of passengers carried via international flights rose by 2.2%, according to the airline.

“Cargo/mail carried during this period increased by 9.5% and reach 1.4 million tons,” the company said.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers Turkish Airlines carried in November rose by 3.7% to reach 5.7 million year-on-year, with an 85% seat occupancy rate.

Turkish Airlines, founded in 1933, flies to 317 destinations in 126 countries with its fleet of 348 aircraft, including passenger and cargo planes.

Last year, the company carried 75.2 million passengers with a seat occupancy rate of 82%, and this year it aims to reach 80 million passengers on domestic and international routes.

According to the data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, in 2018, 1.1 billion passengers travelled by air in the European Union (EU), up by 6% compared with 2017 and by 43% compared with 2010. Over this period, air passenger transport has steadily risen in the EU. In 2018, intra-EU transport represented almost half (46%) of total air passenger transport in the EU and extra-EU transport over a third (37%), while national transport accounted for fewer than 1 in every 5 passengers (16%).

Largest increase in air passenger transport in Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia

In 2018, the largest number of air passengers was recorded in the United Kingdom (272 million passengers), followed by Germany (222 million), Spain (221 million), France (162 million) and Italy (153 million). The number of air passengers carried in 2018 rose in all EU Member States compared with 2017. The highest increases were registered in Lithuania (+19%), Latvia, Poland and Slovakia (all +16%), ahead of Estonia and Hungary (both +14%), Malta (+13%), Luxembourg (+12%) and Finland (+11%), whilst the lowest increase was registered in Sweden (+1%), followed by the United Kingdom (+3%), Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands (all +4%). Among the top 5 Member States in terms of air passengers transported in 2018, the highest increase was registered in Italy (+6%).

London/Heathrow, Paris/Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam/Schiphol: top 3 passenger airports

London/Heathrow remained the EU’s busiest passenger airport in 2018, with 80 million passengers handled, slightly up (+3%) compared with 2017.
