Egg prices in the EU increase by 30% over one year

Food prices have increased substantially over 2022. One of the food products with the highest price increase is eggs. Data for January 2023 show that the price of eggs in the EU was, on average, 30% higher than in January 2022.

Much smaller price increases were recorded in January 2022 compared with January 2021 (+7%) and in January 2021 compared with the pre-COVID-19 month of January 2020 (+1%).

Among the EU countries, the highest increase in annual inflation for eggs was recorded in Czechia (+85% in January 2023 compared with January 2022), followed by Hungary (+80%) and Slovakia (+79%). Smaller but still substantial increases were recorded in Germany and Luxembourg (both +18%), and Austria (+19%).

Hen egg production decreased by 2%, number of the slaughtered chicken decreased by 7.6%, chicken meat production decreased by 8.5%, and turkey meat production decreased by 29.7% in October compared with the same month of the previous year. Turkey meat production increased by 1.2%, chicken meat production decreased by 0.1%, number of the slaughtered chicken decreased by 0.3%, and hen egg production decreased by 0.7% in January-October period compared with the same period of the previous year.

Number of the slaughtered chicken increased by 6.2%, chicken meat production increased by 4.7%, hen egg production decreased by 1.9%, and turkey meat production decreased by 12.2% in April compared with the same month of the previous year. Chicken meat production increased by 7.9%, number of the slaughtered chicken increased by 7.3%, hen egg production increased by 0.4%, and turkey meat production decreased by 1.3% in January-April period compared with the same period of the previous year.
