It can be a co-worker, a client or your boss. If your boss calls you every day of the week (including Sundays) about deadlines and projects. If your co-worker doesn’t give you information you need to solve an issue or tries to undermine you whenever they can. The problematic client who is never satisfied.
Professor of Organizational Behavior, Robert I. Sutton says: “They’re everywhere.”
The Workplace Bullying Institute conducted a research and asked: “Have you ever seen, observed, or been subjected to prolonged bullying or repeated bullying?” Essentially 50% say “Yes.”
How do you identify the bully?
If you notice people who feel hurt, demeaned and de-energized, they’re probably being subjected to these toxic behaviors by a work bully. Observe interactions around the office and you’ll find them.
How do you deal with the situation?
- Avoid them as much as possible. Don’t go where they can talk to you. Don’t get into arguments and don’t let them pull you into a fight.
- If you can’t ignore them, if they sit close to you or you have to work together for some reason, just observe their behavior like a scientist and don’t engage in personal conversations.
- If you believe they’re not doing it on purpose you can try talking to them.
- Fight back, with caution. Don’t get aggressive but stand your ground and challenge their actions.
- Make your boundaries clear. If they cross the line into harassment or insult you can talk to your managers or human resources and let them know this behavior is inappropriate and affecting your productivity and well-being.
- If it’s your boss, you might try talking to them about the issue. And if you can’t solve the situation, you might need to change jobs. In the end, you did your best and tried to explain your situation. But don’t be hasty and don’t burn your bridges even if you’re able to leave.
