Here’s some career advice from Former USA Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who says he turned down the job three times because of a fear of failure, before finally accepting the position:

  • “Do things you enjoy and you’re gonna do well.”
  • “I picked [the boss] where maybe the least interesting work was going to be, but I thought I would learn a lot from him.”
  • “When you’re making a decision in a real crisis, you don’t worry about public criticism. The one thing you’re focused on is how you prevent disaster. You always need to trade off an imperfect decision with what happens if you do nothing.”
  • “İf the only way you can do well is working more hours than someone else you’re going to lose out, because there’s always going to be someone who is going to work more.”
  • I learned that almost as important as what I was doing was who I was doing it with. It really made a big difference.
  • “It’s all about working with others. Getting anything done that’s important requires that.”
  • “Leadership is working on common ground and listening to other people. A relationship is not just shaking hands, or having dinner together, but working together to get things done.”
  • “Complementary skill sets compensate for individual weaknesses, the defining qualities of leadership are “insatiable” intellectual curiosity, self-awareness, decisiveness and care for people.”
